The Louisiana Purchase...

Item # 702421

November 05, 1803

LANCASTER JOURNAL, Pennsylvania, Nov. 5, 1803

* Historic Louisiana Purchase
* Expansion of the United States

A very notable issue as contained on pages 1 and 2 are the: "Treaty Between the United States & the French Republic" outlining the details of what we now know as the Louisiana Purchase, followed by two Conventions of the treaty which outlined the details of the payments to France. These documents were agreed to in Paris on April 30, 1803 and signed on May 2. The Senate would ratify the treaty on October 20 and President Jefferson would sign it. Formally the U.S. took possession of the Territory on Nov. 30 when France and Spain finalized the formalities between the two nations.
Four pages, interesting lettering in the masthead, archival strengthening at the blank spine, a few very minor archival mends at margins, very nice, clean condition.

AI notes: The Louisiana Purchase in 1803, was a $15 million deal where the U.S. bought over 828,000 square miles from France, doubling its size. Negotiated by Livingston and Monroe, it secured control of the Mississippi River and opened land for westward expansion. France sold the land to fund European wars and after losing interest in its American colonies. The purchase greatly expanded U.S. territory and influence.
