background: On October 20, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln issued a Thanksgiving proclamation, continuing a tradition he had begun in 1863 during the Civil War. In this proclamation, he called upon Americans to observe Thursday, November 24, 1864, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God for the blessings the nation had received, despite being in the midst of a brutal civil war. Lincoln acknowledged the continuing hardships but emphasized the importance of gratitude for the Union's preservation and recent military successes. He also urged citizens to offer prayers for widows, orphans, mourners, and sufferers from the war, and to heal the wounds of the nation. This proclamation helped further establish the annual national observance of Thanksgiving, which would later be codified as a federal holiday.
