Terrific political cartoon from the Revolutionary War...
Item # 701553
February 01, 1778
THE WESTMINSTER MAGAZINE, London, England, February, 1778 The prime feature of this issue is a great full page plate which is a political cartoon concerning England as it relates to the American colonies (click here to see a high-resolution photo of the cartoon).
A page has an: "Explanation of the Political Print--A Picturesque View of the State of the Nation", while an auction hall has a better explanation:
"An extremely rare satirical print depicting Great Britain as a cow, being “milked” of her natural resources by a Dutchman while America – personified by an Indian – saws off her horns. The bounty is shared gleefully by the Dutchman with his European colleagues, a Frenchman and a Spaniard. An obviously powerless Englishman wrings his hands in despair while the British lion lies asleep, oblivious to even a small dog’s indiscretion. In the background, a British ship has run aground with Lord Howe and General Howe asleep at a table. Philadelphia is in the background."
See the photos for the magazine's explanation of the cartoon.
There are a few items relating to the war and America, including a back page item: "Authentic Heads of lord North's Conciliatory Bills with Respect to America".
Complete in 56 pages plus the plate, 5 by 8 inches, in great condition.
Another dealer offers this print alone, without the magazine, for $2,000
