THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY OR, AMERICAN ORACLE OF LIBERTY, Worcester, July 29, 1779
* Paul Revere masthead engraving
* American Revolutionary War era
Of great significance is the masthead, as the embellishments and ornate lettering were engraved by none other than Paul Revere. This newspaper was published by the famed Isaiah Thomas, a staunch patriot during the Revolutionary War, and founder of the American Antiquarian Society.
The front page begins with: "A PROCLAMATION" signed in type by: J. Rutledge, governor of South Carolina. It begins: "Whereas the most vigorous measures are necessary for stopping the ragged of the enemy, and defeating them in their attempts to ruin and enslave this country, and for supporting its freedom and independence...".
This is followed by a letter signed by: Thomas Jefferson, as governor of Virginia, to Congress and dated at Williamsburg, which concerns the work of Colonel Clarke in the Western frontier. It is rare to find Revolutionary War-era letters signed by Jefferson.
Then a letter detailing the Battle of Stony Point, New York, introduced by a letter signed by: Horatio Gates. A related report on page 3 begins: "With pleasure we can inform the public that the fort lately erected by the British at Stony Point was taken, between one and two in the morning of the 16th, by a detached party of our army under the command of Gen. Wayne..." with more detail.
Much more war-related content including much on the back page.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, nice condition.
