AI notes: In July 1814, during the War of 1812, American forces under General Jacob Brown captured Fort Erie in Canada by surprising a smaller British garrison. This gave the U.S. a key base on the Niagara River, enabling further operations. The British later attempted to recapture the fort in a major siege but failed, keeping Fort Erie under American control until the war’s end.
