The historic letter from the French asking Washington to spare the life of Captain Asgill... Loyalists in America abandoned by England...

Item # 700885

February 14, 1783

THE EDINBURGH ADVERTISER, Scotland, Feb. 14, 1783  Pages 2 and 3 contains a: "Letter from Count DeVergennes to General Washington, dated at Versailles the 29th of July, 1782" which deals with the Captain Asgill Affair
In retaliation for the execution of a patriot officer, Washington ordered the death of a British officer chosen by lot from prisoners; this selected Asgill. The French monarchy became involved and let it be known that such measures would reflect badly on both the French and American nations, conveying the message through the French Foreign Minister, the gentleman who signed the above-mentioned letter, writing to Washington on July 29. After six months the Continental Congress agreed that Asgill should be released to return to England on parole.
Following Vergennes' letter is a letter from Mrs Asgill to him dated 11 days earlier.
Another page has a report concerning Loyalists in America. One bit mentions; "...The tract of land deed to the American states, within the fatal boundary chalked out by the large provisional treaty & cut out of the province of Canada, is immense... unable to discover a single stipulation in favor of the Loyalists, but hard the mortification o had the fifth article, by which they were actually abandoned & left to the mercy of their avowed enemies..." with more.
Eight pages, 8 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches, full red tax stamp on the back page, minor archival mend at the bottom of the front leaf, very nice condition.
