Dealing with Loyalists...

Item # 700818

July 01, 1783

THE GENERAL EVENING POST, London, July 1, 1783

* Closing events in the Revolutionary War
* Loyalists escaping New York City

The front page has several items relating to the closing moments of the Revolutionary War, a few bits including: "...Every thing is settled between Sir G. Carlton & the Congress in respect to the claims for money due on account of prisoners, and the other matters in dispute; and the evacuation of New York was finally settled to take place towards the end of June..." and related to this is: "Orders" from headquarters, New York: "All persons desirous to leave New York are to give in their names at the Adj. General's Office before the 7th of June...and where they wish to be removed to." Also: "...It appears by the American papers that several towns have entered into a resolution not to admit any of the Loyalists to resettle among them & many who had returned to the places they formerly belonged to, have been sent back to the British lines."
There is also a very historic report on the recapture of The Bahamas by the British, from Spain: "...commanded by Major Devious, landed on the island of New Providence... surprised the Spanish garrison...without any loss on either side, upon which the island was immediately surrendered to the English."
Page 3 also has reports headed: "America".
Four pages, partial red tax stamp on page 3, very nice condition.
