NEW-ENGLAND PALLADIUM, Boston, Dec. 11, 1804 Page 2 begins with a full column taken up with reports headed: "The War With Tripoli" known as the First Barbary War. Included is a quite lengthy letter reporting a naval battle, with much detail.
Four pages, good condition.
AI notes: In 1804, the U.S. Navy brig Syren took part in the bombardments of Tripoli during the First Barbary War, supporting American attacks on the city. Lieutenant James R. Caldwell, a naval officer in the same campaign, was killed on August 7, 1804, when a Tripolitan cannonball struck a U.S. gunboat, causing an explosion. Caldwell was later honored for his bravery.
