background: On September 21–22, 1864, during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, Union General Philip Sheridan decisively defeated Confederate General Jubal Early at the Battle of Fisher’s Hill, near Strasburg, Virginia. Following Early’s retreat from the Third Battle of Winchester, he established a strong defensive position along the hills at Fisher’s Hill, believing the terrain would protect his flanks. On September 21, Sheridan carefully positioned his approximately 35,000 troops, probing Confederate lines, and on September 22, he launched a coordinated attack: infantry under Maj. Gen. George Crook struck the Confederate right while Brig. Gen. Alfred Torbert’s cavalry swept around to flank and roll up Early’s line. The maneuver caused the Confederate defenses to collapse, forcing Early’s 14,000 men to retreat south, abandoning artillery and supplies. The Union victory effectively cleared the Shenandoah Valley of Confederate forces, secured the region, and demonstrated Sheridan’s skillful use of combined arms, marking a crucial turning point in the 1864 campaign while boosting Northern morale in the lead-up to Abraham Lincoln’s re-election.
