Item # 700405

December 10, 1875

THE DALLAS DAILY HERALD, Texas, Dec. 10, 1875

* President Ulysses S. Grant
* State of the Union Address

Almost all of page 2 and a portion of page 3 are taken up with the: "PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE" signed in type by: U.S. Grant.
This was the annual state-of-the-union address, a tradition from Washington to the present time. Among two of the many subheads are: "The Black Hills" and: "The Indian Territory".
Page 2 also has an editorial on the Message.
Four pages, many tears at the margins with some disbinding loss at the blank spine.

background: In his 1875 State of the Union Address, President Ulysses S. Grant emphasized the need to uphold civil rights and protect African Americans in the post-Reconstruction South, including the continued use of federal enforcement to ensure fair elections. He advocated for sound economic policies, including a return to the gold standard, and highlighted progress in foreign relations, particularly with Great Britain. Grant also called for civil service reform to combat government corruption, promoted universal public education as essential to preserving democracy, and reiterated his administration’s efforts to manage Native American affairs through a peace policy. The address reflected his enduring commitment to justice, stability, and national unity despite political and economic challenges.
