America's first man is space is heralded with this headline: " 'WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT!' --SHEPARD" with subhead: "Flight Is Made In 15 Minutes At 5,100 MPH". There is also a photo of Alan Shepard in the capsule and one of the Mercury rocket.
This was an historic first in America's effort in the space race with the Soviet Union, still behind as the first man in space was Uri Gagarin's flight of less than a month prior.

background: On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft, launched by NASA's Mercury-Redstone 3 mission. His suborbital flight lasted about 15 minutes, reaching an altitude of 116 miles and a speed of over 5,000 miles per hour. Shepard manually controlled parts of the flight and splashed down safely in the Atlantic Ocean, where he was recovered by the USS Lake Champlain. His successful mission marked a major milestone for the U.S. during the early years of the space race with the Soviet Union.
