Item # 698893

August 21, 1852

THE CAMPAIGN, Washington, D.C., August 21, 1852

* Franklin Pierce campaign publication

A quite scarce campaign newspaper that was short-lived, existed for just 22 issues during the presidential campaign of Franklin Pierce.
This is the only issue we have encountered, and is in somewhat damage condition with much chipping at the margins, folding as well. See the photos.

AI notes: The Campaign was a short-lived yet politically significant newspaper published in Washington, D.C., around 1852, primarily serving as a voice for the Democratic Party during a turbulent pre-Civil War era in American politics. Edited by Robert Armstrong, the paper functioned as a partisan organ during the presidential election campaign that ultimately brought Franklin Pierce to the White House. Like many political newspapers of the time, The Campaign was established with the specific goal of influencing public opinion and rallying support for Democratic candidates and policies, often featuring editorials, speeches, and party propaganda. Its publication coincided with a period of intense sectional tension over issues like slavery, states’ rights, and territorial expansion, and the paper likely reflected and amplified the Democratic Party’s stances on these controversies. Though it ceased operation within a year or two, The Campaign exemplified the role of partisan journalism in mid-19th-century American political life, particularly in the nation’s capital.
