AI notes: The Black River Gazette of Lowville, New York, is generally understood to have been an Anti-Masonic publication, especially during the late 1820s, when Anti-Masonry was a powerful political and social movement in upstate New York. Located within the core region affected by the 1826 disappearance of William Morgan, the paper reflected widespread local hostility toward Freemasonry by publishing editorials, commentary, and reprinted articles critical of the Masonic order and supportive of Anti-Masonic reform ideals. While it continued to function as a typical rural weekly—carrying local news, legal notices, agricultural information, and national reports—its editorial stance placed it firmly within the expanding Anti-Masonic press network that helped mobilize voters and shape public opinion in northern New York. This alignment linked the Black River Gazette to the broader Anti-Masonic political movement, which soon developed into America’s first significant third party and influenced state and national politics well beyond its short publication run.
