AI notes: By 1854, Nauvoo, Illinois, had transitioned from a once-thriving Latter-day Saint center to a quiet river town. After the forced departure of the Mormons in 1846, the city was gradually repopulated, notably by German immigrants. The Nauvoo Temple, once a symbol of the city's prominence, had been destroyed by fire in 1848 and further damaged by a tornado in 1850. Though no longer a religious hub, Nauvoo remained a site of historical significance due to its role in the early Mormon movement.
