THE AMERICAN, Washington, D.C., Sept. 3, 1884  This was the newspaper of the American political party. Their platform is found on page 4 and includes in part: "That ours is a Christian and not a heathen nation, and that the God of the Christian scriptures is the author of civil government...That God requires and man needs a sabbath...We demand the prohibition of the importation, manufacture and sale of intoxicating drinks...We hold to and will vote for woman suffrage...That polygamy should be immediately suppressed by law..." and more.
The front page has a very lengthy article: "Frederick Douglass' Letter - A Vigorous Reply to the Writer by an Old Abolitionist". Also: "Woman Suffrage & Moral Reforms".
Page 3 notes the 1884 nominations for President & Vice President for the American Party (also known as the Prohibition Party).
This is the volume 1, number 24.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
