Latest news from the Revolutionary War in a very rare newspaper...

Item # 695809

May 07, 1779

THE AMERICAN JOURNAL & GENERAL ADVERTISER, Providence, Rhode Island, May 7, 1779

* Very rare American Revolutionary War publication

A truly rare title from the Revolutionary War, as it lasted for less than 1 1/2 years from March, 1779 to August, 1781. This issue is volume 1, number 8.
Inside has a report from Charleston beginning: "Five deserters who came last week to Purysburgh [Purryisburg] informed that the British troops were moving down the country to Savannah...a body of them  was to go to Port Royal...also mention there having been a mutiny among the soldiers...". Another item notes: "...arrived in Hampton Roads, Virginia, with a flag of truce from New York. They bring clothing, baggage...for the use of the officers & soldiers who were made prisoners with General Burgoyne at Saratoga...".
A report from Virginia notes: "...that there have been lately raised in that state upwards of 2000 men for the Continental service..." and a letter from Albany gives some updates on battles in the vicinity (see).
The back page has a letter from Edenton, North Carolina which includes: "The British troops had penetrated up the country as far as Augusta, in Georgia...they made a precipitate retreat down to the town of Savannah, leaving their friends, the tories, and their sick to shift for themselves...". A report from Boston begins: "We hear the American refugees in England have lost their hopes of returning in triumph to this country...They despair of...seeing America under a British military government, & all the leaders of the revolution hanged...".
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, great condition.
