July 25, 1857

SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, July 25, 1857  It is subtitled in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Agriculture, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage". 
The bottom of page 7 has a report headed: "Base Ball" noting in part: "...that a match will be played between the Nassau' and 'Charter Oak' Base Ball Clubs...The 'Charter Oak' is a new club with some smart players in their 'nine', and if their exercise is as good as their name, should be able to 'do something', but if they come within fifteen 'runs' of the Nassau, they will have 'good luck', as the Nassau is a crack Club, having beaten everything that has crossed their path..." with more.
Twelve pages, 12 1/4 by 17 3/4 inches, a sporting-themed engraving in the masthead, great condition.
