Confederate reaction to the abolishing of slavery: to be decided by the sword...
Item # 694444
February 06, 1865
DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, Feb. 6, 1865 A wonderful issue from late in the war, from a period it is typically difficult to find Confederate newspapers.
The prime content is the reporting of the Thirteenth Amendment prohibiting slavery. Page 2 has: "Passage of the Bill Abolishing Slavery in the United States--Scenes in Congress--Cannon Firing and Bell Ringing in Yankeedom". This report begins: "The Yankees have performed another grand Chinese feat. They have amended the Constitution so that it will do what their armies cannot--abolish slavery..." with much more on this.
Similarly, page 3 has: "Abolition of Slavery by the United States Congress" which states in part: "...the Yankee Congress have passed an amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery throughout the United States, which, in their acceptance of those terms, means also the Confederate States...Whether the law shall ever be carried into effect as regards these Confederate States remains to be decided by the sword..." with more.
There is other war-related content including: "The Herald on the 'Peace' Mission--The Confederacy Only Recognized As A Gigantic Riot" "Return of the Peace Commissioners--Lincoln's Terms" "Going North" "A Negro Celebration in Louisiana" and much more.
Four pages, some binding indents at the blank spine, nice condition.
