AI notes: In May 1862, Union Admiral David G. Farragut launched an early naval campaign against Vicksburg, Mississippi, aiming to gain control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy. Following his successful capture of New Orleans in April 1862, Farragut sailed upriver with a fleet and reached Vicksburg by mid-May. However, he encountered strong Confederate fortifications atop the high bluffs, and without sufficient ground troops to mount a siege or occupy the city, he was unable to take Vicksburg.
