AI notes: After the First Battle of Winchester on May 25, 1862, Union General Nathaniel P. Banks conducted a hasty and disorganized retreat northward toward Harper’s Ferry following a decisive Confederate victory under Stonewall Jackson. Jackson’s forces had effectively outflanked and overwhelmed Banks’ position, causing confusion and panic among Union troops. During the retreat, Banks abandoned Winchester, leaving behind significant quantities of supplies, artillery, and prisoners, as his army moved in a hurried, staggered formation through the rugged Shenandoah Valley. The rapid withdrawal reflected both the tactical skill of Jackson in exploiting mobility and the vulnerability of Banks’ forces, who were unable to maintain cohesion under pressure. This retreat not only marked a clear Confederate triumph in the Valley Campaign but also demonstrated the strategic challenge the Union faced in containing Jackson’s highly maneuverable forces.
