An inside have has: "The Mormons" noting in part: "...detailing the series of horrible outrages and wanton butcheries by which the Mormon settlers were massacred and driven from their lands in Western Missouri by the piratical squatters of that region...relation of that horrible tragedy was often interrupted by the tears & sobs of the auditory...resolutions expressive of profound sympathy for the oppressed...committee was then appointed to solicit contributions for their relief...Missouri, until this blood is washed from her gamesters, is a disgrace to the Union." and more. This likely refers to the Hawn's Mill Massacre.
The same page has: "The Case of the Amistad" which reports on the trial and the case against the African slaves. A 1997 movie of the same name was directed by Stephen Spielberg.
This was published by the famed Horace Greeley, begun some seven years before his more famous 'New York Tribune' which print its first issue. Although he would work at several newspapers prior to the 'New Yorker', this would be his first successful venture, eventually reaching a circulation of 9,000.
Long active in politics, Greeley served briefly as a congressman from New York and was the unsuccessful candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant.
