March 09, 1865

THE INDEPENDENT, New York, March 9, 1865  This was a weekly newspaper. Page 2 begins with: "President Lincoln's Inaugural Address"  which takes half a column & includes the famous phrase: "...With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive to finish the work we are in...".
This is followed by a great editorial headed: "The Re-Inauguration" which has some wonderful comments from an eye-witness to the ceremonies. One bit mentions: "...The central personage in the scene shows a grayer head and a more careworn face than four years ago...a partially sad and thoughtful expression of his eyes, and a quaint & pleasing homeliness in his gait & gesture, gage a touch of undeniable majesty to this singular man..." and much more.
There are a few reports on the Civil War as well.
Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed, large folio size, archival repairs & strengthening at the spine and some of the folds and margins, minor wear at the margins.
