AMERICAN PHRENOLOGICAL JOURNAL, New York, October, 1853 Phrenology is a theory stating that the personality traits of a person can be derived from the shape of the skull. Although holding no validity today, it was a popular science in the mid-19th century and this periodical focused on it.
Inside has: "Phrenology, Ask Applicable to the Professions" "Importance of Phrenology", a biographical sketch of Amos Pilbury, with a print of him.
Also an article & 3 prints on the skulls of native Australians. The full back page is taken up with a large print & article on "The Latting Observatory", a wooden tower in New York City built as part of the 1853 Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, adjoining the New York Crystal Palace. It was the tallest structure in New York City from the time it was constructed in 1853 until it was shortened in 1855. It was an inspiration for the Eiffel Tower.
Complete in 24 pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
