Great reporting on the lead-up to South Carolina leaving the Union...
Item # 690973
December 24, 1860
DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, Dec. 24, 1860
* Secession convention in South Carolina
* History about to be made w/ Civil War
A wonderful issue as most of page 2 is taken up with the very detailed, verbatim discussion headed: "South Carolina - Proceedings of the Convention" held on December 17, 18, and 19. Th following day South Carolina would formally adopt their Ordinance of Secession (not reported here). The discussion is wonderful, too lengthy to show here in the several photos.
Page 3 has some related articles including: "The 'Personal Liberty Laws' of the South" "The Border States" and "The Georgia Secession Resolution".
Terrific to have these reports in this notable newspaper from the nation's capital.
Four pages, large folio size, light damp stain at the bottom, good condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
background: In December 1860, South Carolina held a special convention where delegates overwhelmingly decided to secede from the United States. Prompted by Abraham Lincoln’s election and fears that the federal government would threaten slavery, South Carolina issued a declaration explaining their reasons and formally seceded on December 20. This marked the first state’s break from the Union and set the stage for other Southern states to follow, leading to the Civil War.
