NEW YORK HERALD, Feb. 3, 1865 Among the front page column heads on the Civil War are: "SAVANNAH" "Terrible Conflagration in the City" "More than 200 Buildings Destroyed" "The City Shelled for Two Hours" "Fearful Scenes" "SHERMAN" "Movements of General Sherman" "His Army Less Than 40 Miles from Charleston" "The Peace Mission" "President Lincoln En Route for Fortress Monroe" "Soldiers of Both Armies Greet Them with Hearty Cheers" and more.
But perhaps of greater interest is the back page report concerning the passage of the 13th Amendment of the Constitution abolishing slavery.
The top of the page has column heads: "THE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY" "Speech of the President on the Constitutional Amendment" "The Amendment Ratified by Rhode Island, Michigan and Illinois" "Speech of Mr. Lincoln on the Constitutional Amendment".
The report takes over half a column, mostly taken up with the report on Lincoln's speech. The amendment was proposed just two days prior.
Eight pages, minor binding slits at the blank spine, nice condition.
