IAPI OAYE, THE WORD CARRIER, published by the Dakota Mission in Dakota Indian territory (later South Dakota), April, 1878 This very uncommon newspaper was founded in 1871. Pages 2 and 3 are in the Dakota Indian language while the last page is in English.In 1884 the editor decided to divide & separately publish the Dakota and English language material, titled separately "Iapi Oaye" and "Word Carrier". This issue precedes that event and carries both names in the masthead.
The entire front page is a print showing Jesus & the other two on the road to Emmaus.
Page 4 has the address of the publisher, the Rev. A. L. Riggs, at the Santee Agency, Nebraska.
Four pages, 11 by 15 1/2 inches, some margin wear, good condition.
