background: In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, U.S. forces stormed the heavily fortified Japanese stronghold known as the Citadel around Shuri Castle, facing fierce resistance in brutal close-quarters combat. The capture of this key defensive position after weeks of intense fighting broke the main Japanese line, paving the way for the eventual Allied victory on Okinawa, but at a high cost of casualties on both sides.
