NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Nov. 18, 1862 Among the front page column heads on the Civil War are: "Rebel Evacuation of Snicker's Gap" "Cavalry Expedition to the Shenandoah" "The Blockade of Charleston Harbor" and more.
One report: "The Proclamation--The Contrabands--White Slaves in the South" which refers to Lincoln's recent Emancipation Proclamation. Some text includes: "...soldiers are almost universally in favor of the late proclamation...Large numbers of slaves are used about Corinth...They have all come voluntarily within our lines, are very submissive...a great many in every regiment as cooks Almost every officer has his black servant...I have not seen a fugitive yet who could be hired to return to his master...Slaves generally awaited the approach of our army to make their escape from bondage...a few were afraid...About one-half have white blood in them. Some are so nearly white that no one at the North would think they were in the remotest degree descended from the negro race."
