Wirz is hanged... Trial of Jeff Davis... Reconstruction...

Item # 684718

November 15, 1865

THE CRISIS, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 15, 1865

* Warden Henry Wirz execution - hanging
* Andersonville Confederate Prison - Georgia
* Confederate president Jefferson Davis trial

Among the articles are: "The Latest Phase of Reconstruction" "The Trial of Jefferson Davis--The President and Chief Justice Consult About It" "Reported Insurrectionary Movement of Negroes" "the Execution of Capt. Wirz - His Last Moments--His Courageous Conduct on the Gallows" and an editorial on this event headed: "Execution of Wirz" which begins: "It is to be hoped that the blood-thirsty element in the North will rest easier...".
Eight pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet, a small wear hole at the middle fold juncture, minor rubbing otherwise with a bit of foxing.

Described as "The Hottest Rebel Sheet to be found in the North or the South", this newspaper opposed the war and attracted the hatred of the Republicans and the Lincoln administration. It insisted that slavery could not be prohibited by law. So obnoxious was this paper to Unionists that it was denied circulation in some cities. In 1863 the press was raided by a hateful mob.
