Wonderful & early report on Sutter's Mill...

Item # 684001

June 24, 1844

DAILY NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., June 24, 1844

* Early Sutter's Mill report
* Pre gold rush - John Sutter

 Page 3 has one of those little gem reports collectors seek: very early mention of a name that would be notable years later.
Printed here is a letter which says in part: "...the following communication from J. A. Sutter, the Alcalde of the new town of New Helvetia, on the river Sacramento, one of the branches of the San Francisco. All parties by land from the Oregon, or from the United States to California, touch at this establishment first; and most of the emigrants on land from the States since 1840 have settled near Mr. Sutter...".
And what follows is a wonderful--and quite rare--letter signed by: J. A. Sutter concerning Fremont's expedition.
Of course it was at John Sutter's mill where gold was discovered in 1848.
Four pages, very nice condition.

AI notes: On March 6, 1844, explorer John C. Frémont wrote a letter during his second expedition through California, documenting his visit to Sutter’s Fort, an agricultural settlement established by John Sutter near present-day Sacramento. At the time, Sutter’s Mill—later the site of the 1848 gold discovery—had not yet been built. In the letter, Frémont described the Sacramento Valley’s landscape and resources, as well as the hospitality he received from Sutter. The letter reflects the early American exploration of California, several years before the Gold Rush transformed the region.
