President Garfield is shot...
Item # 683931
July 03, 1881
NEW YORK TIMES, July 3, 1881 The column headlines at the top of the front page announce the assassination of President James Garfield: "A GREAT NATION IN GRIEF" "President Garfield Shot By An Assassin: "Though Seriously Wounded He Still Survives" "The Would-Be Murderer Lodged In Prison" with subheads as well.
Further down a column is: "The Tragedy In The Depot" "Guiteau Fires His Cruel Shots From Behind the President--The Wounded Man's Removal to the White House--Amazement & Horror of the Populace".
Text on this important event takes six columns on the front page and continues inside.
Garfield would eventually die from his wounds making him the second President to be assassinated.
Twelve pages, lightly toned, much chipping at the margins due to fragility, mostly loose at the spine. No effect to the mentioned report, however this issue must be handled carefully.
