THE NATIONAL ERA, Washington, D.C., Feb. 3, 1853
* Harriet Beecher Stowe
This newspaper is forever linked to the best-selling novel of the 19th century, "Uncle Tom's Cabin", for the book was originally released as a 40 week serial in this anti-slavery newspaper beginning in June, 1851.
It was the newspaper's publisher who encouraged Stowe to produce the work in book form, and it is common consensus that the book had much to do with popularizing sentiment which lead to the Civil War.
Page 2 has several reports relating to Uncle Tom's Cabin including a report which notes in part: "...Uncle Tom's Cabin is to be found in a great many houses in this city, and receives more or less of condemnation, though universally admitted to be a superior work of art..." with more. Another item makes reference to a review of the work, and a third is similar.
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, nice condition. Folder size noted is for the issue folded in half.
