January 03, 1863
GLEASON'S LITERARY COMPANION, Boston, January 3, 1863 This newspaper celebrated the first issue of the new year by printing in color--a great rarity and one of the earliest newspapers to do so.
Under the heading on page 9: "The Companion In Colors" the publisher explains: "We present a great novelty to our readers & the literary world...printed in eight different colors, viz.: golden, purple, flesh, crimson, blue, green, brown and black. Such a unique & splendid specimen of newspaperial typography we may safely asset never before saw light in any other city of this continent, or the world. It has required twelve different presses to perform...as only one color could be printed at a time..." with more.
The color appears only on the front page.
Sixteen pages, some wear at the margins and light damp staining in the upper right corner, a few minor archival mends at the margins, 11 1/2 by 16 inches.
