This town would arguably be--along with Tombstone & Dodge City--one of the more famous of all the towns from the rough & tumble days of the Old West, and only rarely do such issues come to light. Plus, this is a volume 1 issue.
This issue is from the "heyday" of the Wild West. Some of the most celebrated names of the Old West passed through Deadwood, not the least of whom was "Wild Bill" Hickok, who was famously murdered in this town in 1876.
The front page has a report: "Testimonial to General Sutter" mentioning details of s dinner in his honor, noting in part: "...brief speeches testifying their respect for the discoverer of gold in California, eulogizing his enterprise, and speaking of his many acts of kindness & generosity toward the earlier immigrants to that country. General Sutter was affected to tears by the words uttered in his praise...".
