Item # 678426

May 21, 1872

NEW YORK HERALD, May 21, 1872  James Gorden Bennett, this newspaper's publisher, capitalized on the 19th century fascination with Africa & the whereabouts of explorer Dr. David Livingstone by hiring journalist Henry Stanley to search for him. Livingstone had ventured to Africa in 1865 for a two year expedition with little heard from him since.
So it is of no surprise that the Herald offered extraordinary coverage of the adventures of Stanley and Livingstone in Africa.
Page 7 begins with a nearly half column of heads including: "LIVINGSTONE FOUND" "Herald Special Report From Zanzibar" "Detailed News or the Herald African Exploring Expedition" "Confirmation of the Former Reports" "Livingstone & Stanley Together at Ujiji" "How The Welcome Tidings Came" and much more.
Also on page 7 is: "The Herald And Dr. Livingstone--The Foreign Press on the Herald's Livingstone Expedition".
Livingstone-related reports take fully two-thirds of the page.
Complete in 12 pages, nice condition.
