September 23, 1862

THE NEW YORK HERALD, Sept. 23, 1862... in unusually nice condition.  A terrific issue with this historic content, as the entire text of the famous Emancipation Proclamation, wherein President Abraham Lincoln freed all slaves in both the North & the South, is contained in the first two columns of the front page. More typically this text is found on inside pages of most newspapers. The heading at the top of the first column boldly reads: "A PROCLAMATION by the President Of The United States" "Operations of the Confiscation Act" "All Slaves in Rebellion January 1, 1863, to Be Free" "The President Renews the Offer to Pay for Slaves of Loyalists" (see photos). This document is signed in type near the top of the second column: Abraham Lincoln. The balance of the ftpg. is mostly taken up with Civil War reports and includes two one column maps as well (see photos). Complete in 8 pgs. This issue is in unusually nice condition - well inked, good margins, and little to no rubbing.  One of the gem issues of the 19th century.
