June 20, 1812
NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington City, June 20, 1812
* War of 1812 declaration by United States
* James Madison proclamation
This is perhaps the best newspaper to be had for reporting the Declaration of War against England, beginning the War of 1812.
Taking nearly half of the front page and over a full column on page 2 is Madison's very lengthy letter to congress, prefaced with: "The induction of secrecy was about an hour ago removed from the following Message, Report or Manifesto and Act."
This document details the reasons for initiating a war with Great Britain, signed in type: James Madison.
Page 3 has the official war document: "AN ACT Declaring War between the United Kingdom oof Great Britain and Ireland and the dependencies thereof and the United States of American and Their Territories." followed by the text, signed in type: James Madison.
Then a report beginning: "The veil is at length removed from the Secret Proceedings of Congress; and it appears that unqualified WAR is declared between the United States and Great Britain..." with more. Included as well is the vote, by name, for a declaration of war in the Senate and the House.
Still on page 3 has a great printing of: "By The President of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION" on the declaration of war.
Truly a wealth of fine accounts of this significant event, but fully expected to be found in this newspaper which was essentially the mouthpiece of the federal government.
Four pages, some archival strengthening at the spine, there are some portions missing near the spine but fortunately not affecting any of the mentioned reports. Otherwise in nice condition.
