PORTER'S SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, Dec. 13, 1856
* Very early pre-Civil War baseball
As noted in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage", this is a volume 1 issue of a very early sporting publication.
One of the columns is headed: "Base Ball" which notes in part: "We understand that a new club has been started in Brooklyn called the 'Americus'..." with more. Also talk of the "Putnam Base Ball Club" with some nice & very detailed accounts of a game. The baseball reports take three-quarters of a column.
Near the back of the issue is a column entitled: "Our Chess Department" which includes a chess "problem of the week". Other sports reports are headed: "Fistiana" (boxing) "Pedestrianism" "The English Turf" and more.
Sixteen pages, an ornate sports-themed masthead, slightly irregular at the spine, good condition.
