This is the famous anti-slavery newspaper by famed abolitionist publisher William Lloyd Garrison. The masthead features two engravings, one of a slave auction and the other showing slaves being emancipated.
Page three features a full column article "Fifty-Fifth Regiment Massachusetts Colored Volunteers" which provides various details about not only this African-American regiment but others as well, including the more famous Mass. 54th Regiment led by Col. Robert Shaw. Included is: "...There is considerable feeling among the men of the 54th and 55th regiments, because they are to be paid only ten dollars a month. They enlisted with the understanding that they were to be paid & treated the same as other Massachusetts regiments..." with more.
There are some other items concerning "negro troops" including a brief note that: "Negro troops numbering about 200 have arrived here from the West...the first occasion on which negro volunteers have been permitted to use the barracks, which stand on city property." and also: "Gen. Rosecrans has just completed recruiting two full regiments of negroes, and has commenced a third." And also an item beginning: "The first negro regiment in the Department of Cumberland has been organized...".
Other items concerning the Civil War including those headed: "The Lawrence Massacre" which relates to Quantrell & his work, plus: "Lecture on Emancipation" and more.
Great to have so much coverage concerning "negro" or "colored" Civil War troops in this anti-slavery newspaper.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, minor wear at fold junctures, some very discrete archival mends, good condition.
