THE CONFEDERATE STATES, New Iberia, Parish of St. Martin, Louisiana, Sept. 12, 1863
* Extremely rare wallpaper publication
A quite rare newspaper as the beginning & ending dates are not known, and Gregory notes only two issues are located in just one institution.
Of particular significance is this being a wallpaper issue. During the Civil War, with most of the paper mills located in the North, several Southern newspapers ran out of newsprint in the latter years of the war, with some becoming resourceful in printing on what could be found. In his instance, wallpaper.
The ftpg. begins with a nice: "Conscript Call!" to recruit more soldiers, then four "General Orders" from the military. And the back page has more items concerning the war, and other items as well. Included are: "Monroe Occupied & Evacuated by the Rebels" "How the Yankees Have Revenged Sumter".
Actually a four page newspaper with pages 1 and 4 containing reports and pages 2 and 3 being the wallpaper pattern. Minor loss at the top & bottom of the central fold, and small pin holes near the fold from having once been bound. Condition is quite nice with a few minor margin tears.
