CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, July 23, 1934
* John Dillinger shot dead (1st report)
* Chicago theater w/ photos
* Best title to be had - very rare
Perhaps the very best newspaper to be had for a report on the killing of infamous outlaw & gangster John Dillinger, as this is the city where he it happened.
The bold, banner headline announces: "KILL DILLINGER HERE" with subheads: "Slain By U.S. Agents As He Leaves Theater" "Story of Purvis, Leader In Long Desperado Hunt" "2 Women Wounded as Outlaw Falls on Lincoln Ave.' and another ftpg. article: "Father Collapse When Told Of Death Of Desperado Son".
Because he was slain in Chicago, it is not surprising that the extent of coverage is considerable. The report carries over to pages 2 and 3 where additional articles are found including: "Crowd Storms Morgue To See Outlaw's Body" "Reveal Dillinger Seared Fingers in Acid" "Witness Tells How Dillinger Went To Death" "All Happened in Split Second, He Says" "John Dillinger Legend Born of His Daring Deeds" "Audacity in Crime seizes Public Imagination" "Dillinger Death Brings Elation To Cummings" "Dillinger Fine Chap, Says Mary Kinder, Harry Pierpont's Girl" "Here Are the High Points in Life of John Dillinger".
Add to this the terrific back page, which is entirely taken up with photos relating to the death of Dillinger, including one of him in the morgue. Others show an animation of how the killing occurred, plus others relating to his life (see).
The complete 28 page issue. This is the "rag edition" printed on very high quality newsprint meant for the requirements of institutional holdings consequently in great condition. Four small binding holes at the blank spine.
