The front page has a report: "Troubles In Mississippi - Disturbance at a Political Meeting - Several White Men and Negroes Killed". This riot began over the use of liquor where it was prohibited. The report includes: "...When the colored Marshal approached them and forbade the drinking. This order was not regarded, and when the Marshal attempted to take the bottle out of Siveley's hand Siveley struck him over the head with. Senator Caldwell, colored, started to settle the difficulty, and was followed by some twenty negroes... Some one fired a shot, which was followed by a general firing and a stampede..." In the end, at least forty African-Americans were killed.
Eight pages, lite toning, good condition. A bit fragile & should be handled with some care.
