Death of the Prince of Wales... Handel's Messiah...

THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, London, April, 1751  There is an interesting report of a performance of Handel's Messiah, which includes: "Was performed in the chapel of the Foundling Hospital the sacred oratorio Messiah, under the direction of G.F. Handel, Esq., who himself play'd a voluntary on the organ; the amount of the sum for the tickets delivered out was above 600 pounds."
Near the back is the "Historical Chronicle" which has various news reports from throughout Europe. Included is a report on the funeral of the Prince of Wales including a graphic representation of the funeral proceedings.
There is an interesting article titled: "An Authentick Account of the Surprising Centaur..." which includes a print of it. Also included is much on the Crusades (a continuing report), with "Lewis IX Conducts the last Crusade" "Damiata Taken--Crusaders Capitulate" and "Conclusion of M. Voltaire's Crusade, or Holy War".
Other items include: "The Male Maucauco, from Mr. Edward's History" which includes a print of this monkey; "Cure by Electricity--Inoculation Fatal" "Convents Proposed for penitent Prostitutes" "Judgment on Atheists--Elohim spoken of One" "Calculations of a Lunar Eclipse", two pages of sheet music and various poems.
Plates called for are lacking but the two illustrations within the text as mentioned above are included.
Complete in 48 pages , full title/contents page, 5 1/2 by 8 3/4 inches with wide, untrimmed margins, very nice condition.
A very nice pre-Revolutionary War magazine from the "mother country" with a wide range of varied content. This was the first periodical to use the word "magazine" in its title, having begun in 1731 and lasting until 1907.
