President Arthur on the polygamy issue in Utah... The bandit Frank James...

Item # 638753

December 05, 1883

ST. LOUIS GLOBE-DEMOCAT, Dec. 5, 1883

* Mormons and polygamy
* President Chester A. Arthur
* Outlaw Frank James trial

Over half of the front page and page of pg. 2 are taken up with: "The President's Message" being the annual state-of-the-union address of Chester  A. Arthur. Near the end he addresses: "The Mormon Question", noting: "...I fear that it is far from indicating any real and substantial progress toward the extirpation of polygamy. All of the members of the Legislature are Mormons. There is grave reason to believe that they are in sympathy with the practices that this government is seeking to suppress...I am convinced that polygamy has become so strongly entrenched in the Territory of Utah that it is profitless to attack it with any but the stoutest weapons..." and more.
Also of interesting is a pg. 4 report taking most of a column: "FRANK JAMES" "The Bandit Appears in the Kansas City Criminal Court" "January 14 the Trial Dy for the Blue Cut Robbery--The Meeting with Charley Ford".
Twelve pages, some tears a the top margins of some leaves, otherwise very nice.
