THE GAZETTEER & NEW DAILY ADVERTISER, London, Dec. 29, 1778 Page 3 has a report noting in part: "General Clinton is much condemned for permitting Generals Grant and Lord Cornwallis to return from America at this critical period...we learn that Gen. Clinton had made every disposition for evacuating New York before the approaching frost..." and more on the military situation in America.
The back page mentions the execution of John Roberts and
Abraham Carlisle, two elderly Quakers who were tried & sentenced for collaborating with the British although the case is considered to have been politically motivated. It was thought that this hanging was a motivation for Benedict Arnold to turn traitor (see hyperlink for much on this). Most of this report is a letter from the Quakers concerning it (see).
