January 06, 1939
THE NEW YORK TIMES, January 6, 1939
* Aviator Amelia Earhart
* Missing in the Pacific
* Officially declared dead
Page 4 has a small and discrete report headed: "Miss Earhart 'Legally Dead'" See image for 1st report coverage on a California judge officially making Amelia Earhart deceased after being missing for about 1 1/2 years.. Unfortunate for the limited report here but still a 1st report in the New York Times. I suspect this is one of the few publications to report this particular event as other titles in our inventory do not.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 42 pages, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.
