September 21, 1814

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Sept. 21, 1814  The front page has: "Events of the War--On Lake Champlain--Decisive Naval Victory" which takes a full column. But the prime content is the great coverage of the Battle of Baltimore, primarily the land battle although an early report of the naval attack. Articles include: "War Near Baltimore" "Particulars of the Attack on and the Repulse of The British From  Baltimore" which includes a diagram of the land battle showing the position of the military units with the Black River, Petapsco River, etc (see). "Operations On The River" includes: "...proceeded up the Petapsco to invest Fort McHenry situated on a peninsula...Between the fort and the North shore in the passage to Fell's Point was a line of sunken hulks" and another report notes: "Early this morning about 20 sail of armed vessels...formed in crescent in front of fort McArthur [sic] and commenced a furious cannonade and bombardment, with shot, shells and rockets; and which was continued without much intermission for 24 hours. The fire was returned...Only six men wer killed in the fort." and yet another report includes: "At one 'clock this morning the enemy's bomb vessels & rocket ships passed fort McArthur [sic] into the Petapsco...and threw some shells and rockets towards Fell's Point and the Java frigate...but they here met with so tremendous a fire from all the forts & batters...that they were obliged precipitately to retire...".
More war-related reports including: "The Events at Plattsburg" but they pale in comparison to the Battle of Baltimore content. Note the error in reporting "Fort McArthur" instead of "Fort McHenry".
