SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, New York, Dec. 16, 1848 Inside has a great article on what was essentially a very early & crude predecessor to the motion picture: "Banvard's Panorama" with an illustration of it. Be sure to see the hyperlink which has much detail on the famed artist John Banvard who traveled much throughout the country promoting his "moving panoramas" of the Mississippi River Valley.
