OAK RIDGE JOURNAL, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Aug. 9, 1945 Oak Ridge was established in the early 1940's as a base for the Manhattan Project, the massive United State government operation that developed the atomic bomb. In the efforts of serious collectors to own newspapers from as close to "where it happens" as possible, this could well be the best newspaper concerning the atomic bomb outside of a Japanese newspaper.
Note the banner headline above the masthead: "Oak Ridge Attacks Japanese", which would not be found in any other newspapers. The tone of the remainder of the front page is great pride in the efforts of the employees of Oak Ridge, with the 3 line banner headline reading: "Workers Thrill As Atomic Bomb Secret Breaks; Press And Radio Stories Describe 'Fantastically Powerful' Weapon; Expected To Save Many Lives", with a subhead; "Bomb Has More Power Than 20,000 Tons of TNT; Price is Reaction Of Workers". Included is a lengthy letter to the contractors & workers of Oak Ridge congratulating them on their: "...hard work & American 'stick-to-it-iveness'...delivered to the Japs with a world-shaking crash--the thrill that comes with the knowledge of a tough job well done...".
