IAPI OAYE, THE WORD CARRIER, published by the Dakota Mission in Dakota Indian territory (later South Dakota), October, 1874
* Rare title
This very uncommon newspaper was founded in 1871 with pages 1, 2 & 3 in the Dakota Indian language, and the last page in English. In 1884 the editor decided to divide & separately publish the Dakota and English language material, titled separately "Iapi Oaye" and "Word Carrier". This issue precedes that event and carries both names in the masthead (see).
Much of the front page is a print of "Madagascar" with text on it as well.
Four pages, 10 3/4 by 15 1/2 inches, old tape around the perimeter of pages 1 & 4, some margin chipping, otherwise good.
